GKN Aerospace is seeking applicants for Aircraft Surface Finishers (Painter) at their facility in Tallassee, Alabama. The Tallassee facility, located about 35 miles from Montgomery, Alabama, has been in operation since 1985 and employs over 1,000 people, producing composite aerostructures for major OEM aerospace industry partners.




Responsible for highly skilled or routine tasks associated with complex aircraft parts and assemblies, which include the painting of metallic and composite surfaces; corrosion control; surface preparation and the operation of aircraft paint support equipment; identification of technical issues and maintenance of technical publications. Position also works with stenciling and the application of tapes and transfers.


  • Researches technical data and performs aircraft parts and/or assembly painting functions, applying knowledge of surface preparation and painting techniques in accordance with customer, company and governmental guidelines.
    Cleans, sands, and applies chemical solutions to prepare and condition surfaces prior to painting.
    Mixes and thins paint or other coatings to specific color and consistency according to standard formulas.
    Masks and covers surfaces not to be painted.
    Sprays specified amount of primer, protective, decorative, or finish coatings, such as paint, lacquer, sealer or enamel onto prepared surfaces using spray paint equipment.
    Follows routine and/or complex blueprints and specifications to perform the following functions: stripping, sanding, masking insignias, symbols or designs; locating other markings on aircraft parts or assemblies; using stencils, patterns, measuring instruments, brushes, or spray equipment.
    Regulates controls on equipment to cure and dry paint or other coatings.
    Sets up and operates portable ventilators, exhaust units as required.
    Performs maintenance work  such as repair and maintenance of company equipment and shop housekeeping.
    Operates lifting and moving devices to move materials and equipment as required.
    Performs other duties and responsibilities as required.


  • High School Diploma or GED
    Minimum three (3) years of work experience with GKN or three (3) years direct and related work experience performing the functions required by the position.
    Work experience and/or training in the use of all types of spray paint equipment and hand tools, wrapping, and stripping for paint, cleaning and corrosion removal required.
    Experience in paint preparation procedures, mix and spray of paints, primers and chemicals.
