AIDT is seeking applicants for pre-employment training for Multiple Operator Positions with AM/NS Calvert in Calvert, Alabama. AM/NS Calvert is a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel Corporation, two of the world’s leading steelmakers. MULTIPLE OPERATOR POSITIONS

STARTING WAGE: $21.81

REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL POSITIONS:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Experience working in a heavy industrial setting preferred (not required), such as steel mill, paper mill, manufacturing, mining, or like environment.
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment used for industrial purposes preferred (not required), to include cranes, fork trucks, heavy machinery, and hand and power tools.
  • Basic math and reading comprehension skills.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • May be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Products (Outlook, Excel, Teams, Word).

HOURS & WORK CONDITIONS FOR ALL POSITIONS:

  • Industrial setting in the steel making facility.
  • Construction setting for first 1 – 2 years.
  • Indoor and outdoor environmental conditions with exposure to elevated noise levels and extreme heat; Will work around molten metal.
  • Required to work at heights of up to 50 ft.
  • Personal protective equipment required.

Shift:

  • Initially: Day shift, Monday to Friday with extended hours as required due to periods of peak workloads.
  • During commissioning, start up, and operations: Rotating 12 hour shifts to include days, nights, weekends, and holidays.

POSITIONS/DUTIES

MELTING OPERATOR:

  • Perform strenuous physical activities in extreme heat
  • Operate and monitor steelmaking equipment to include Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), Ladle Metallurgy Furnace (LMF), and RH degasser
  • Monitor EAF electrical equipment, operating at up 1000 volts and 148,000 amps
  • Perform oxy-fuel burner operations
  • Collaborate with Caster operator to control and maintain temperature of molten metal coming from furnaces; adjust as needed
  • Operate lance system to inject oxygen, carbon, and/or lime
  • Monitor production of foamy slag for protection of water-cooled wall panels of furnace & aiding in heat transfer to scrap
  • Visually monitor chemistry of product on computer screens
  • Use temperature and sampling devices to take temperatures, oxygen readings, and steel samples
  • Monitor and manage slag pots/pits, such as cleaning out pits with shovels, as needed
  • Assist in maintaining refractory (patching or gunning)
  • Maintain tap hole
  • Monitor scrap and scrap charging process
  • Observe all safety rules, to include lock out procedures
  • Coordinate and work with all mill personnel in maintaining mill production
  • Perform routine maintenance; assist maintenance personnel
  • Monitor and notify supervision and maintenance personnel of any abnormal job and equipment conditions
  • Operate and maintain mobile equipment to include fork trucks
  • Training will be provided

CASTER OPERATOR:

  • Perform strenuous physical activities in extreme hea
  • Operate steelmaking equipment to include Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), Ladle Metallurgy Furnace (LMF), RH degasser, and continuous caster
  • Collaborate with furnace operator to control and maintain temperature of molten metal from furnaces
  • Observe slab quality and make necessary adjustments to casting conditions to correct defects
  • Ensure proper operation and maintenance of molten Tundish boxes
  • Enter and record necessary production records; Ensure finished slabs are properly identified
  • Make slab samples; Check temperature and observe tip oven as required
  • Set up tip assemblies and caster for operation; adjust as necessary for startup and during normal operations
  • Observe all safety rules, to include lock out procedures
  • Coordinate and work with mill personnel in maintaining mill production
  • Perform routine maintenance; assist maintenance personnel
  • Monitor and notify supervision and maintenance personnel of any abnormal job and equipment conditions
  • Operate and maintain mobile equipment to include fork trucks
  • Training will be provided

REFINING OPERATOR:

  • Perform strenuous physical activities in extreme heat
  • Operate and monitor steelmaking equipment to include Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), Ladle Metallurgy Furnace (LMF), and RH degasser
  • Monitor slag levels
  • Monitor position & condition of ladle during RH/LMF operations
  • Collaborate with Furnace operator to control and maintain temperature of molten metal coming from furnaces; adjust as needed
  • Use computerized controls to monitor rate of circulation of steel in vessel
  • Take samples
  • Add alloys according to recipe guidelines
  • Monitor argon rinse process and limit delays in the refining process
  • Observe all safety rules, to include lock out procedures
  • Coordinate and work with all mill personnel in maintaining mill production
  • Perform routine maintenance; assist maintenance personnel
  • Monitor and notify supervision and maintenance personnel of any abnormal job and equipment conditions
  • Operate and maintain mobile equipment to include fork trucks
  • Training will be provided

REFRACTORY OPERATOR:

  • Perform strenuous physical activities in extreme heat
  • Performing all types of refractory installation methods, including gunnite, pouring, ramming, pumping, ceramic fiber, shotcreting and/or firebrick installation
  • Reading and interpreting refractory lining drawings
  • Using brick saw and bricklaying equipment to lay brick up in ladles, furnaces, tundishes, etc.; handle bricks by hand for multiple hours at a time
  • Performing plug changes, repairing slide gates, etc.
  • Installation of brick and refractory materials into shapes and combinations, including keying in brick rings
  • Welding, cutting, grinding, installing anchors, forming and pouring
  • Assisting in the cleaning and preparing ladles, furnaces, tundishes, etc. for repair, relining and fabrication
  • Assisting with postmortem tear outs and accurately documenting findings
  • Performing preventive and general maintenance tasks on tools and refractory equipment; documenting the preventative maintenance
  • Performing spare parts and tool inventory count to ensure site specific standards are maintained; completing detailed inventory usage reports at the end of shift
  • Provide training to teammates; Teaching installation procedures to and providing guidance to others
  • Coordinate and work with all mill personnel in maintaining mill production
  • Monitor and notify supervision and maintenance personnel of any abnormal job and equipment conditions
  • Training will be provided
